Blue Mountain Christian University (BMCU) is addressing Mississippi’s growing healthcare workforce needs by expanding access to nursing education and strengthening student support services. Located in rural North Mississippi, the university recognized that limited classroom space and the need for enhanced student retention efforts were restricting its ability to prepare more nurses for the region’s healthcare system.
Through support from AccelerateMS, BMCU was able to invest in two critical priorities: expanding its nursing education facilities and providing dedicated student support through a Nursing Navigator. While the original project planned to renovate an existing building, university leaders determined that renovation could not be completed safely. Working collaboratively with AccelerateMS, the project was revised to support the construction of a new facility featuring larger classrooms and additional faculty offices, creating space for future growth.
At the same time, BMCU implemented Nursing Navigator services to help students overcome academic, personal, and financial barriers that can impact persistence and graduation. By providing individualized guidance and support, the navigator has helped students stay on track and successfully progress through the nursing program.
The results are already evident. More than 150 students have benefited from various aspects of the project, and the university continues to experience strong growth in nursing and pre-nursing applications. The program enrolled 66 nursing students and is now positioned to accommodate up to 90 additional students in future cohorts. BMCU has also launched an accelerated nursing pathway for students who already hold degrees, creating new opportunities for individuals seeking to transition into healthcare careers.
Student success has remained a central focus throughout the expansion. Program leaders report that only a small number of students have been unsuccessful in completing the program, with some returning to continue their studies and graduate. Many others discovered during clinical experiences that nursing was not the right career path, allowing them to make informed decisions about their futures.
The university’s new facility, the Jessie Mauney Center for Healthcare Education, honors the legacy of Dr. Jessie Mauney, a Blue Mountain graduate and pioneering physician who dedicated her life to serving rural communities. At a time when women faced significant barriers in medicine, Dr. Mauney persevered, earned her medical degree, and spent decades caring for patients across North Mississippi—often making house calls and treating individuals regardless of their ability to pay.
Today, her legacy lives on through a new generation of nursing students preparing to serve the communities she loved.
As BMCU continues to expand enrollment and strengthen student success initiatives, the university remains focused on its mission: preparing compassionate, highly skilled nurses who will improve healthcare access and outcomes across rural Mississippi.
