As Mississippi’s transportation and warehousing sector continues to grow, Northwest Mississippi Community College (NWCC) is helping meet the demand for skilled commercial drivers through expanded training opportunities funded by AccelerateMS.
The investment came at a critical time, as the logistics and supply chain industry faced significant workforce challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic. Transportation and warehousing remain the largest and fastest-growing industry sector in DeSoto County, creating an urgent need for qualified commercial drivers to keep goods moving efficiently throughout the region.
To address this demand, NWCC expanded its commercial truck driving program to dedicated facilities at The Concourse in Batesville and the DeSoto Campus in Olive Branch, creating a broader regional pipeline of talent for the logistics and transportation industry. The expansion increased the program’s capacity to serve more students while improving access to training opportunities closer to where many learners live and work.
The program follows the Mississippi Community College Board curriculum framework and offers a College Credit Certificate in commercial truck driving, preparing students to earn a CDL Class A license. NWCC also enhanced the curriculum with coursework in Professional Truck Driving and Hazardous Materials, giving graduates additional skills and opportunities to pursue specialized endorsements that increase their employability.
Funding supported more than program expansion. NWCC invested in additional training materials, equipment, and an extra truck and trailer to accommodate growing enrollment and provide students with hands-on learning experiences that mirror real-world industry conditions. Support also helped strengthen marketing and outreach efforts, raising awareness of career opportunities within the transportation sector and connecting more prospective students with training opportunities.
The impact has been significant. By expanding to two training locations and increasing available resources, NWCC has improved access to workforce training, increased program capacity, and strengthened its ability to prepare students for high-demand careers. More individuals now have the opportunity to gain the skills needed to enter a stable, essential industry that plays a vital role in Mississippi’s economy.
Beyond expanding facilities and equipment, the investment has helped create greater visibility for the program and the opportunities it provides. Students now have increased access to training resources and industry-relevant equipment, helping them build the skills and confidence needed to successfully enter the workforce.
Looking ahead, NWCC plans to continue growing the commercial truck driving program through expanded recruiting efforts, stronger industry partnerships, and increased community awareness. By building on the momentum created through AccelerateMS support, the college is helping ensure that Mississippi’s logistics and transportation employers have access to the skilled workforce they need while creating new career pathways for students across the region.
