Driving the Future of Automotive Training at East Central Community College
As the automotive industry rapidly evolves, technicians need more than traditional mechanical skills. They must be prepared to work on hybrid and electric vehicles, advanced diagnostic systems, and modern automotive technology. East Central Community College (ECCC) recognized that its training program needed to evolve alongside the industry to ensure graduates were ready for today’s workforce.
With support from AccelerateMS, ECCC enhanced its Automotive Technology program by investing in new training equipment, including electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engine vehicles, along with updated instructional trainers. These upgrades replaced outdated training vehicles that no longer reflected the technology students would encounter in the workplace and laid the foundation for teaching hybrid and electric vehicle systems.
The impact was immediate.
Students gained hands-on experience with modern equipment, resulting in stronger performance on industry-recognized certification exams. The investment didn’t just modernize the lab—it helped students succeed. Industry certification results improved across the program, with ASE pass rates climbing dramatically in multiple courses and EPA certification reaching a 100% pass rate by the 2024–2025 academic year.
The upgraded equipment also strengthened recruitment efforts. Vehicles branded with East Central Community College became a visible demonstration of the program’s commitment to modern automotive technology, giving many prospective students their first exposure to hybrid and electric vehicles. As interest grew, the college developed a new Light Duty Hybrid and Electric Vehicles course, first offered in Fall 2025, expanding opportunities for students to prepare for emerging careers in the automotive industry.
Beyond student outcomes, the investment created momentum across campus.
According to ECCC leadership, the success of the Automotive Technology project inspired instructors throughout the Career and Technical Education division to pursue innovative ways to modernize their own programs. What began as an investment in one department helped foster a broader culture of continuous improvement, encouraging faculty to seek industry-standard equipment and training opportunities that better serve Mississippi’s workforce.
Looking ahead, East Central Community College plans to continue working closely with local employers to ensure its curriculum remains aligned with industry needs. The college is already planning major enhancements to its welding program, including expanding degree pathways and upgrading training facilities to prepare even more students for high-demand careers.
