I2PA Graduate Finds Career Momentum Through Mississippi Trades Training

CLINTON, Miss. — December 2, 2025  – A welding class was all it took to redirect Rose Sanchez’s career plans. What began as curiosity grew into a pathway toward Mississippi’s fast-expanding skilled trades workforce.

Sanchez, a native of Puerto Rico, graduated from the Amazon Web Services Information Infrastructure Pre-Apprenticeship (I2PA) program in September. Since then, she has earned certifications in fiber fusion, basic electrical skills, and is currently on pace to obtain her Class B CDL license.

Before I2PA, Sanchez planned to pursue carpentry technology in 2026. Her direction shifted after enrolling in a welding course offered through the Mississippi Reconnect Program, aimed at re-engaging unemployed and underemployed residents.

“I always wanted to experience welding, so I dove in headfirst,” she said. “Then I realized welding was connected to the carpentry work I hoped to do long-term.”

A family friend shared information about the upcoming I2PA cohort. Sanchez researched the program — a four-week introduction to high-demand trades including carpentry, electrical, and fiber — and applied immediately. With more than 800 applicants, she saw acceptance as unlikely, but support from workforce partners helped her secure a spot.

“After a few days of pure anxiety, I was in,” she said.

During the program, Sanchez gravitated toward carpentry, electrical wiring, and fiber splicing. Conduit bending was the only skill that challenged her, but further practice at Hinds Community College changed her perspective.

“Once I had more time with it, everything clicked,” she said. “The program broke the ice for me. After graduation, I felt ready to take on any challenge — applying for jobs or selling my skills to employers.”

She is currently considering several job opportunities in Mississippi’s growing fiber and electrical trades as she continues expanding her credentials.

“I’m more confident than ever that a career in the trades is what I want to do long-term,” she said.
