Rep. Donnie Bell recognized by National Association of Workforce Boards

04/02/2024

Mississippi Representative Donnie Bell received the Workforce Advocacy and Policy Award from the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) in recognition of his efforts in spearheading the state’s innovative career coach initiative, which serves as a vital bridge connecting students with promising career pathways tailored to meet the needs of growing industries.

“This is a well-deserved recognition,” said Dr. Courtney Taylor, Executive Director at AccelerateMS. “Through his tireless efforts and hard work, Donnie has played a pivotal role in shaping Mississippi’s future, fostering a landscape of opportunity and prosperity for generations to come.”

The award underscores Bell’s advocacy at and state levels, highlighting the profound impact of workforce development initiatives on job seekers, employers, and overall economic prosperity. The accolade was bestowed upon him during the NAWB annual workforce development conference held in Washington DC last month.

As the Chair of the Workforce Development Committee, Bell played a pivotal role in championing House Bill 1517 in 2022. This legislation initially allocated $8 million to launch the pilot program under the American Rescue Plan Act, with subsequent funding increased to $12 million the following year. Today, in collaboration with regional development organizations, the program boasts nearly 180 high school career coaches serving 115 school districts across the state.

A Tupelo native representing District 21, Bell has been a dedicated public servant since his election in 2008.
